HEMI is an engine name rooted in the hemispherical combustion-chamber concept. Stellantis's HEMI Heritage reference explains the classic name through chamber shape and the nearly central spark-plug arrangement. The name is useful historical context, but it is not a complete specification for a vehicle.

One name, different engines

Dodge uses HEMI across different engine configurations. For example, the September 3, 2026 Durango release distinguishes GT HEMI AWD, R/T 392 and SRT Hellcat models. The release describes different outputs for those configurations; a HEMI badge alone does not tell a buyer which one is installed. Nor does it establish displacement, induction, transmission, fuel requirement or maintenance schedule.

How to identify the engine

Record the model, model year, market and trim, then check the vehicle's documentation and the manufacturer's information for that precise configuration. Compare the engine identification and service records with the advertised description. If a car has been modified or had an engine replaced, original trim information may no longer describe its present hardware.

Reading specifications responsibly

Do not assume that engines sharing a marketing name have identical chambers, parts or performance. Compare figures only when the units, rating method and application are known. Use the matching owner's manual for operation and maintenance, rather than advice intended for another HEMI-equipped Dodge.
