A model is a named vehicle family, such as Dodge Charger or Challenger. A generation groups a substantial design era within that family. A model year is the manufacturer's vehicle designation. A trim identifies a particular equipment or performance configuration. These labels answer different questions and should not be used interchangeably.

Dates and design eras

A calendar production or announcement date does not automatically establish a model year. Likewise, a change in equipment during a design era does not necessarily establish a new generation. When a source does not define the boundary, do not invent a generation date or platform code.

A practical Dodge example

The 2023 Charger owner's manual identifies its model-year application but also warns that some described features may be optional or not fitted. Possessing that manual therefore does not prove that a particular 2023 Charger has every feature shown in it. The same caution applies when comparing advertised trim names with the actual car.

Build a precise identification

Write down the model, model year, market, trim, engine, transmission and drivetrain when those facts are documented. Use the VIN, original paperwork and physical inspection together. A seller's registration year, a generic manual and an exterior badge each provide only part of the picture. Exact identification makes maintenance research and comparisons more useful and avoids applying instructions from a different vehicle.
